OVERVIEW

Alon organizes volunteer shoreline cleanup opportunities coupled with informational campaigns to educate the local on environmental stewardship, and to inform policies that prioritize sustainability. This was a project I started working on right before I graduated, and was eventually driven to success by a passionate team.

LOCATION

The Philippines is an archipelago consisting of thousands of islands. It sits firmly in the Verde Island Passage (VIP) Coral Triangle, and sports some of the richest marine biodiversity in the world. The country has over 7000 islands, and as a consequence, a ton of beaches. The beaches create livelihoods and provide amazing places for leisure making them valuable for the locals. I myself, having grown up in the Philippines, have always wanted to help preserve the beautiful nature within. Luckily, I was able to have a jab at that back in 2022 when I started an environmental organization: Alon. The goal of the organization is to work with local government units to raise environmental awareness and organize volunteer cleanups.

WHAT WE DID

  1. Forming the Team, getting on the same page, and developing workflows
  2. Contacting and coordinating with local government units
  3. Site survey and interviewing locals
  4. Call for volunteers, fundraising and preparing program flow
  5. Water quality data collection
  6. Developing new segregation channels, informing new sustainable policies
